FAQ: What To Know About Invisalign

Many patients come to us looking for solutions to straighten their smiles but would like to avoid the metallic aesthetics of traditional braces. Invisalign is a common treatment option that we offer to our patients. As your trusted cosmetic dentist in Charlotte, NC, we wanted to provide some additional information on Invisalign. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions regarding Invisalign:

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system of clear, plastic retainers that are designed custom for your smile. Using dental impressions, the retainers are made to gradually apply pressure to your teeth and encourage them to shift into a straighter position. Invisalign is best used to treat mild to moderate orthodontic concerns, and is great for patients looking to avoid the metallic aesthetics of traditional braces.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Besides the fact that Invisalign retainers are clear, they are also removable. This means that you can take them out while you eat, drink, or brush your teeth. Patients love this benefit of Invisalign because it calls for no dietary restrictions or additional steps in their oral hygiene routine. You can also remove the retainers for special occasions like weddings, first dates, or job interviews. As long as you wear your retainers at least 20-22 hours out of the day, your treatment plan will not be affected.

How long will Invisalign treatment take?

It takes 12-15 months depending on the starting point of your smile. An additional advantage to Invisalign treatment is that throughout your treatment, you will spend less time in the dental chair overall than with traditional braces. This is because with braces, you must repeatedly come in to have the wires tightened to ensure your treatment progresses. With Invisalign, the dentist will tell you beforehand when to switch to your next set of retainers which is usually once every two weeks. We will call you for a few check-up appointments to ensure your treatment is progressing properly; however, this will require far less time in the office than with traditional braces.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

An Invisalign consultation is required before you can begin treatment. During this consultation, your smile will be evaluated to determine if your teeth, gums, and jawbone are healthy enough to undergo orthodontic treatment. Additionally, some orthodontic concerns may require more extensive treatment than Invisalign is able to help.
